Lecture Title: Autoimmune Diseases of the Oral Cavity

This course is intended to familiarize and re-orient participants to basic concepts of immunity and the vast array of autoimmune disorders that affect the oral cavity including common entities such as plasma cell gingivitis, lichen planus, pemphigoid, drug related lesions, etc. Recommended for general dentists, specialists and dental hygienists

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

– Formulate a differential diagnosis for autoimmune lesions of the oral mucosa.
– Familiarize with different medications that are related to oral ulcers.
– Recognize that many other conditions affecting the oral cavity may mimic autoimmune lesions.
– Recognize newer autoimmune conditions that have emerged.
– Understand different biopsy requirements
– Familiarize with different steroids and formulations that can be used to manage autoimmune conditions.

Short bio:

Dr. Neel Bhattacharyya obtained oral and maxillofacial pathology training and received a master’s degree from the Indiana University School of Dentistry, Indianapolis. He received his DDS from the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He is currently, a tenured Full Professor and the Director of the Division and Laboratory in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. He has been at UF for over 20 years and has won numerous teaching awards throughout his career. He is actively involved in a large multistate oral biopsy service which ranks among one of the largest oral pathology biopsy services in the nation. Currently the UF Oral Pathology biopsy service accesses over 16000 tissue submissions from more than 36 US states. He has authored or co-authored more than 170 refereed papers and book chapters covering a diverse range of topics addressing both clinical and microscopic aspects of oral and maxillofacial pathology. He is also actively involved in research studying a variety of topics including MRONJ, Sjogren syndrome and polymicrobial periodontal disease. Dr. Bhattacharyya has lectured extensively in the US and abroad at various regional, national and international meetings.
