This course seeks to update dentists on marijuana, CBD, and vaping as they relate to oral biological changes and risk of oral diseases such as cancer/dysplasia and Periodontal Disease. Dental schools used to focus primarily on tobacco product consumption, its effects on the oral cavity, its cancer risk, risk to overall health, and tobacco cessation counseling. Now that marijuana has been legalized in many parts of the United States, its use has increased, and new trends are emerging. Other popular products include CBD oil and vaping products, which may be tobacco or marijuana based.
Shannon Wallet, Ph.D., is Chair of the Department of Oral Biology at the University of Florida. Wallet holds a bachelor’s in medical technology, a degree in clinical laboratory science, a doctorate in oral biology, and is a tenured professor. She has served across multiple institutions of higher learning as associate dean for faculty affairs, director of basic science, interim chair of foundational sciences, associate dean for research, and as teaching faculty for dental students and residents. In addition, she has a robust research background which is focused on altered innate immune functions.
